“You gave them my helicopter?” he throws his hands in the air as we head towards the meeting room, a space now dedicated for use by myself and my team.

“I’ll get you another one,” I smile. “What did you think of Jess?”

“She’s gorgeous, obviously,” he says, still frowning over the loss of his bird.

That wasn’t the answer I was expecting.

“Uh, yeah, I guess she is,” I smile, “and you two have a great deal in common.”

As I say this, I realise how right I am. Blake is perfect for her.

For me though, I need a strong man, one who won’t take any shit; one who isn’t scared of me when I go into battle mode, one who can match me blow for blow – I need someone like Sam. Even Amir, I frown at my own thoughts, was tough, strong, didn’t bow down to me.

‘What are you thinking? He thinks women are livestock, of course he isn’t going to bow to you – fucking idiot! Blake is a kind man, sensitive, nice – too nice. Argh, there you go again – fucking idiot!’

I scowl and try to focus on what Blake is saying, but realise I have lost the train of conversation, and interrupt him mid-sentence.

“Listen, my plan is to head to the Australian headquarters of the Order to start my search for Delia. You should stay here. You need to heal. Join this biosphere and learn all you can about their technology. I’ll be back briefly before heading off again, and long-term I’ll be back; I promised the president I’d help train the resistance.”

“It makes sense for me to stay, I suppose,” he sighs.

I can see a faint sheen of sweat on his brow, and I realise he is in far more pain than he is letting on.

“Did Liz give you something for your leg?”

“She gave me some painkillers, they should kick in soon,” he nods.

“You can come with me now, then, if all this walking isn’t hurting you too much,” I smile, “I’m pulling together my team to talk through our next step – you might learn something.”

He nods and takes my hand, but I give it a squeeze and drop it. Sharing his bed had been what I needed, it had given me a little warmth in a dark, cold world, but that was it – he needed to know there was nothing else.

“So, Jess is single, footloose and fancy-free,” I smile at him, “just in case you were wondering.”

“When you wish upon a star,” he snorts and shakes his head.

“Not everything that falls from the sky is a good thing,” I remind him.

“Tell that to the man who finds himself surrounded by beautiful women in tight black suits who like to fuck,” he murmurs as we enter the room where Liz and Jess are waiting.

I burst out laughing.
